“What are you in such a hurry to talk about?” Chambers asked the bounty hunter. “I’m pretty sure we’ve got nothing but time on our hands.”

“You have that backward,” said Qorvaq, “so close your mouth and listen.”

“Well, since you ask so nicely,” Fox sniped.

Qorvaq ignored the shot. “Your friend Xi has bought us some time, but not much. We talked before you arrived and came up with a plan. She faked her illness and, with luck, has already used her technology to knock out the Celestine security chief and his guards.”

“Whoa,” breathed Lopez, eyes wide. “You go, Little Miss Genius.”

“I told you not to worry about her,” said Chambers.

“Hatch believes I came to Gedamedes alone,” said Qorvaq. “He’s mistaken. I never travel without three cloaked escort ships and a dozen hunters as bodyguards. They’re currently in orbit, no doubt wondering why my empty ship left the planet and was destroyed while trying to enter pocketspace.”

Chambers felt a glimmer of hope rising. “Are you able to communicate with them?”

“Not from in here. But now that your friend is outside these walls, she can get reach them through any standard communicator. If you people can get me out of this cell, my people and I will help you get off Gedamedes.”

“The two of you came up with this plan?” asked Zephyra. She looked at Chambers. “Perhaps Xi should have been in command all along.”

“How will she get us out of here?” asked Stelmar

“This prison is a black site,” said Qorvaq. “It’s meant for interrogations and other things that the Terrans and Arcadians want to hide from public view, so it’s not recorded—unless someone on the outside activates that camera.”

He pointed to a small glass orb sitting idle within a metal housing. As if on cue, the camera came to life, spinning into position while a red light appeared above it. Chambers watched it all in fascination until Qorvaq said in a stage whisper: “Remember whose face you’re wearing.”

It took a moment for the message to sink in, but once Chambers got it, he instantly fell into character. He looked up at the glass eye and snarled, shaking his fists. “Get me out of here now!” he bellowed in Hatch’s voice. “Their leader escaped and locked me in this cell! Chambers is at large, I repeat, Chambers is at large!”

He began to pace his cell, muttering and yelling obscenities. The others hurled insults and threats at him in return.

“Be ready to move,” Chambers whispered in between rants.

“Just don’t screw this up,” Zephyra warned.

Less than a minute later, the door slid open and ten security guards poured into the room, stun rifles at the ready. Their leader, an Arcadian female, lowered her own weapon and approached Chambers’ cell.

“How did this happen, sir?” she asked.

“Just shut the goddamn thing off and let me out!” Chambers hoped he got the cadence right.

It worked; the guard quickly manipulated the same control panel Thonn had used. The force field winked out of existence immediately.

“Finally,” he growled, stepping out of the cell.
